Former President Donald Trump is sounding the alarm about his hometown, New York City.
With Election Day just weeks away, Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani—a self-described socialist—is leading in the polls.
Trump took to social media, saying, “The best thing that could happen to the Republican Party? A Communist Mayor in NYC. The Dems have gone stone cold CRAZY!”
Trump also reposted a Fox News segment that claimed New York’s real estate industry is “panicking” over Mamdani’s rise.
In the clip from Mornings with Maria, host Maria Bartiromo showed Mamdani blasting his opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, while pushing for higher taxes on the city’s wealthy residents.
Mamdani Links Cuomo’s Donors to Trump
But Mamdani didn’t stop there. He linked Cuomo to Trump by pointing out that some of Cuomo’s donors also supported Trump’s campaign.
Mamdani argued that Trump has already “accepted” his win and hinted that even Trump knows the city’s future is shifting—though Trump clearly sees it as a disaster in the making.
During the segment, billionaire real estate investor John Catsimatidis said property owners are deeply worried. He warned that if Mamdani imposes rent freezes and tax hikes on the rich, it could sink property values and scare off investors.
“Why would anyone pour money into a city where they’re targeted by the government?” Catsimatidis asked.
Mamdani Defends Higher Taxes on Businesses
Meanwhile, Mamdani defended his policies during an appearance on The View. He argued that companies doing business in New York should contribute more. “The corporate greed we’re seeing in this country cannot be separated from the inequality people are living through,” he said.
Trump’s theory is that a Mamdani victory could actually benefit Republicans. He believes that once New Yorkers—and even Democrats—see how the city runs under socialist leadership, they’ll regret it.
With Mamdani promising free buses, free childcare, and rent freezes—all paid for by higher taxes—Trump and his allies say the city could quickly run out of money, leaving wealthy residents looking for the exit.
