Lake George Private Island Estate Hits Market at $10.8M

September 22, 2025

On the sparkling waters of Lake George, often called the “Queen of American Lakes,” a one-of-a-kind private estate is now available for the first time in more than six decades.

This seven-bedroom property, perched on 14 Mile Island, offers over three acres of seclusion just off Bolton Landing, New York, paired with sweeping Adirondack views and a rich history stretching back more than a century.

The estate is now listed at $10,800,000.

“This is a property you never want to leave,” says Crystal Staepal, the listing agent. She notes that out of the 186 islands on Lake George, only a handful are privately owned, and even fewer ever go on the market.

A Storied Past on 14 Mile Island

The island’s name dates back to the 18th century, when British soldiers mistakenly believed it was 14 miles from the lake’s southern tip—it’s actually 11 miles.

In 1857, New York State sold 14 Mile Island, along with five neighboring islands, to William Smith. Over time, the property served as a hotel, a steamship excursion stop, and in 1905, became a private residence.

Design That Captures Light, Air, and History

The estate’s architectural pedigree is as impressive as its setting. Commissioned by owner William Beardsley, the summer home was designed by New York City architect John W. Ingle, who actually camped on the island to study the sunlight, views, and landscape before finalizing his plans.

Ingle incorporated clerestory windows in the great room to capture fresh air, natural light, and even the phases of the moon.

“History and architecture blend beautifully here,” Staepal says. “It’s not just a home—it’s a legacy.”

Craftsmanship and Preservation at Every Turn

Today, the property is a showcase of local craftsmanship. The main house features custom post-and-beam construction, a two-story stone fireplace, and a sweeping 3,000-square-foot southern porch supported by 17 Shelving Rock stone pillars.

“The porch was intentionally offset to capture maximum sunlight,” Staepal notes. “These thoughtful details give the design its timeless feel.”

The estate also includes a boathouse with two-bedroom guest quarters, meticulously restored and honored with the 2019 Adirondack Architectural Heritage Award.

The current owners, the Finley family, purchased the island in 1960 from the Beardsleys and have maintained it with exceptional care ever since.

Unmatched Privacy and Scenic Views

With over 2,600 feet of shoreline, the estate provides a rare private stretch on Lake George, along with a private lagoon, gazebo, and panoramic vistas stretching to Dome Island, Tongue Mountain, and Black Mountain.

“Most homes on the lake only have between 100 and 300 feet of shoreline,” Staepal says. “This property has over 2,600 feet—truly extraordinary.”

The island even features its own FAA-registered seaplane base, allowing private seaplane landings. And while it feels like a world apart, Bolton Landing—with its boutiques, dining options, and the historic Sagamore Resort—is just minutes away by boat.

The estate is also within easy reach of Saratoga Springs, Lake Placid, Vermont, and even Canada, making it both secluded and conveniently connected.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Staepal concludes. “You’re not just buying a home—you’re owning a piece of Lake George’s history and one of the most beautiful spots in the country.”
